LIBYA'S MIGRANT HELL

Libya’s Migrant Hell lays bare the experiences of the men and women embarking on the world’s most dangerous migrant journey through Libya - a side of the migrant crisis hitherto unseen on film.

STORY

With most media attention focused on Syrian refugees crossing the Mediterranean Libya’s Migrant Hell reveals the hidden story of what is happening inside Libya – now the biggest and deadliest route into Europe.

Filmed at the height of Europe’s refugee crisis, we wanted to give a voice to African men and women largely portrayed as undeserving economic migrants and show the dangers they face along the way.

I produced and edit produced the story, working with a group of local fixers on the ground in Libya to secure access to tribal leaders, traffickers, militia groups and detention centres.

I also coordinated the impact campaign and press strategy, liaising with organisations and journalists and writing a variety of articles and opinion pieces.

IMPACT

The documentary made a significant impact with policy makers, human rights organisations and opinion formers in the UK and Europe including requests for further evidence from the International Criminal Court and the European Council.

It received screenings in the House of Commons, Chatham House and to staff at Medecins Sans Frontieres and Amnesty International.

It was the subject of an early day motion in Parliament and resulted in widespread news coverage of some of the issues.
